The “Proof is in the Pudding”

All over the world, people are asking the question: What is a Paleo Diet? According to the historical archives, during the Stone Age, cavemen existed on a diet of plants, berries and wild animals. Some experts believe that because of our genetic programming, modern-day humans we should eat a diet similar to that of our ancient ancestors, in order to be healthy. Of course, we can’t eat exactly like the cavemen did because wild game (dinosaurs) are not readily available to most households.

The Paleo Diet emphasizes a modified version of the Stone Age regime that includes such foods as fruits, vegetables, seafood, lean meat, nuts and seeds, and healthy fats. Dairy foods, grains, processed food, sugar, legumes, alcohol and starches are to be avoided. The plan also encourages people to be physically active on a regular basis.

The Paleo Diet Menu should include:

• Lean meat, such as chicken, lean beef, turkey, pork loin or seafood. Lean meat helps build healthy muscles, strong bones and a good immune system. Protein foods will also make you feel full so there is no need to snack between meals.

• Raw or steamed vegetables of various colors. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which have been shown to decrease the likelihood of developing chronic disease.

• Fats from Avocado, olive oil, or fish oil

• Nuts, such as nuts, pecans, macadamias or walnuts

The many benefits of the Paleo Diet include:

Weight loss

The Paleo Diet is somewhat controversial. Some nutrition experts question the scientific validity of the diet’s evolutionary premise. Others maintain that humans need dairy products and grains.

Supporters of the Paleo Diet say people are genetically programmed to eat as cavemen did. They also say it’s a way to cut down the ever-increasing incidence of chronic ailments that plague modern-day Americans.
